Climate Shelters for Adapting to Extreme Heat
The CLISHE Interreg Italy – Slovenia project focuses on adaptation to extreme heat, which increasingly threatens residents in the cross-border region of northeastern Italy and Slovenia. By testing and introducing climate shelters, the project aims to strengthen the resilience of local communities – especially the most vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and socially excluded individuals.
Through the establishment of three prototype climate shelters in different urban environments, CLISHE addresses the urgent need for joint solutions that combine climate adaptation with social inclusion, awareness-raising, and spatial interventions.
Added value for the environment and society:
- A joint response to the consequences of heatwaves in urban areas of Italy and Slovenia
- Development of a practical methodology transferable to other regions
- Inclusion of local communities and vulnerable social groups in solution development
- Strengthening cross-border cooperation between municipalities, NGOs, and research institutions
- Climate shelters as a tool to raise public awareness of climate change
- Consideration of multilingualism and the specific features of the cross-border area
Key activities:
- Analysis of local conditions and mapping of heat-vulnerable areas in three pilot cities: Venice (periphery), Lignano Sabbiadoro (city center), Ljubljana (hospital area)
- Establishment of three climate shelters using sustainable spatial solutions (green, blue, and grey elements)
- Development of a joint methodology for the design, management, and replication of climate shelters
- Pilot activities to strengthen the inclusion of vulnerable groups and promote social cohesion
- Workshops, events, and exhibitions to raise awareness of climate change impacts
- Development of action plans for the future expansion of climate shelters
